Based on a true historical event, M Butterfly analyzes the intersection between imperialism, racism, and sex. Gallimard, blinded by his inability to view Eastern men as masculine, betrays his country in an attempt at love. Drawing parallels from Puccini's Madama Butterfly, M Butterfly brings to light the grotesque nature of Western perception of Asia.
